Arne Pappin has built a distinguished career in hockey spanning more than three decades, with experience as a player, coach, scout, video coach, and hockey operations professional at the high school, junior, collegiate, and National Hockey League levels.
Pappin’s hockey career began as a player at the University of North Dakota, where he competed in WCHA hockey and was part of the 1987 NCAA Division I National Championship team. He later played for the Thunder Bay Twins of the OHA Senior ‘A’ Hockey League, helping the club capture the 1991 Western Canadian Championship.
His professional hockey operations career began with the San Jose Sharks in 1991 as an Assistant Equipment Manager. In that role, he was responsible for preparing the team and coaching staff for practices and games. In 1994, he joined the New York Rangers as Video Coach, analyzing individual player performance, working with the coaching staff, pre-scouting opponents, and producing motivational video for the team and individual players. The Rangers went on to win the 1994 Stanley Cup. Pappin subsequently joined the St. Louis Blues as their Video Coach in 1995 and assisted in developing a computerized scouting system for the organization.
Pappin later developed an extensive coaching career. From 2006 through 2010, he coached high school hockey in St. Louis, with a particular emphasis on defensemen, positional techniques, and the overall maturation of young athletes. He also served as a volunteer instructor with the Hockey Academy of St. Louis and was an Assistant Coach for Team Missouri at the 2008 and 2009 Chicago Showcase.
From 2010 through 2015, Pappin served as Director of Hockey and Head Coach of the Damien High School Varsity and Junior Varsity teams in La Verne, California, while also serving as an Assistant Coach with the Ontario Avalanche of the Western States Hockey League. His responsibilities included player development, recruiting, hockey operations, skill development, systems, and game-situation evaluation. During this period, he also served as Head Coach of Team California at the America’s Showcase in 2013, 2014, and 2015.
His coaching accomplishments include leading Damien High School to the 2012 ADHSHL Championship and coaching DeSmet High School to a Missouri State Championship in 2010.
Alongside coaching, Pappin developed significant scouting experience. From 2010 to 2015, he served as California Area Scout for the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League and the Langley Rivermen of the British Columbia Hockey League. His responsibilities included evaluating players at the bantam, midget, and junior levels, submitting scouting reports, assessing prospects, and assisting with roster decisions.
From 2015 through 2018, Pappin was a part-time Professional Scout for the Anaheim Ducks of the NHL. Based in St. Louis, he attended NHL games and evaluated player performance, reported through RinkNet, participated in player transaction discussions, and focused on team needs, prospects, and potential unrestricted and restricted free agents.
Across every level of the game, Pappin has developed a reputation for combining detailed hockey knowledge with strong communication, leadership, analytical thinking, and a team-first approach. His experience provides a unique perspective that connects player development and coaching with professional scouting and NHL hockey operations.
A graduate of the University of North Dakota with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and an emphasis in Public Relations, Pappin brings both hockey expertise and strong communication skills to his work in the game.
