OT Thriller is Foiled by Bad Call!
The Jr. Blues came out in the first period of Sunday's
game and were playing with confidence and purpose. The Jr. Blues
scored the only two goals and had 17 shots on goal. Kyle
O'Kane scored a power play goal to give the Jr. Blues the lead
with Shawn Gawrys and Zach Barron
assisting. Later in the same period, Michael Davies
scored with Tony Jost and Cory Spradling
getting the assists.
With the game seemingly in control, the Jr. Blues took
some undisciplined penalties that allowed the Lumberjacks to get back
into the game. Cleveland's first goal came after the Jr. Blues
took a bad penalty, in addition, they took themselves off of a power play. The
Lumberjacks were able to convert 4 on 4 to get within one goal.
Then the Lumberjacks converted on the ensuing power play to tie the
game. Derek Janssen scored an unassisted goal late
to give the Jr. Blues the lead.
The third period was much like the second, as the
Lumberjacks converted on a 5-3 power play to tie the game. With 10
minutes to go in the game, the Lumberjacks took the lead despite the
spectacular goaltending of Devan McConnell. The Jr.
Blues didn't quit as they tied the game on another Kyle O'Kane goal with Michael Davies picking up the assist.
The game then went into overtime. The four on four
play was dominated by the Jr. Blues as they had numerous scoring chances.
Larry Kopecky scored the game winning goal with 11 seconds
remaining on the clock. Unfortunately, the official waved off the
goal claiming the net had been moved. Video tape replay showed
otherwise and the Jr. Blues had to settle for the tie.

Larry Kopecky Wins Game with 1:14 Remaining!
The Jr. Blues were a bit out of sync, playing a very
strong Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks. Kyle O'Kane opened
the scoring early in the game with Zach Barron and Shawn
Gawrys getting the assists. The hardworking Lumberjacks
were able to tie the game late in the period converting on a 2-1 break.
The Jr. Lumberjacks took the lead midway through the
second period with a power play goal. The Jr. Blues then turned up
the heat as they dominated the rest of the period, out-shooting
Cleveland 18-7 in the second period. Strong goaltending kept the
Jr. Blues off the board in the period until late, when Danny Brown scored
a power play goal. Moments later, Michael Davies
gave the Jr. Blues the lead with Larry Kopecky and Pete
Wildhaber picking up the assists.
The third period was exciting to the end! The Jr.
Lumberjacks tied the game early in the period off of a 5-3 power play.
With the game heading towards overtime, the Jr. Blues pulled it out with
only 1:14 on the clock. Larry Kopecky converted a Ken
Jacobsmeyer pass to score the heroic goal. Mike
Hewkin also picked up an assist on the play. But the game
was not over. A Cleveland player attacked Kopecky after the goal,
but only St. Louis was assessed a penalty. The Lumberjacks pulled
their goaltender and applied tremendous pressure on the Jr. Blues,
enjoying a 6-4 advantage. Goaltender Derek Szesny
and defenseman Pete Wildhaber saved the game for the Jr.
Blues. Szesny made 4 big saves in the flurry and Wildhaber blocked
two shots and made two more tremendous plays in the final minute to
preserve the victory.

Blues Sweep the Jets!
The Jr. Blues scored 3 goals in the first period for
their sixth consecutive game. They took advantage of the Jets undisciplined play. Kenny Jacobsmeyer
scored the games first goal on the power play with Jimmy Jost
and Larry Kopecky assisting. Then the Jr. Blues got
a goal from an unlikely source. With a delayed penalty against
the Jets, the Jr. Blues moved the puck around and Mike Levin hit a
cutting Kyle Butler who scored his first ever CSHL
goal. The stay at home defenseman scored the goal in his 54th Jr.
B game. Moments later Shawn Gawrys hit Michael
Davies with a perfect back door pass for another power play
goal. The Blues held a 3-1 lead at the intermission.
The second period action was slow as both teams were
less than offensive. Zane Truman scored on a 2-1
with Derek Janssen midway through the period. The Jr. Blues relied
on the stellar goaltending of Devan McConnell who made 8
saves in the period.
The third period was one that proved to be too much for
the Jets. The worn out Jets were out scored 4-0 in the
period. Michael Davies, Derek Janssen, Kyle O'Kane and Kenny
Jacobsmeyer added to the total. Devan McConnell made 20 saves in
his second consecutive victory.
The Jr. Blues tune up for the Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks
next weekend at home. The Lumberjacks are coming off an impressive
sweep of the Grand Rapids Jr. Owls this weekend and figure to be a tough
opponent.

Blues Ground the Jets!
The St. Louis Jr. Blues continue their strong start with
a convincing 8-1 victory over the Jets. After the Jets scored the
game's first goal, Kyle O'Kane converted a nice pass from Zach
Barron only 8 minutes into the first period. Late in the
period the O'Kane, Barron and Gawrys line struck
again. This time Barron scored with O'Kane and Gawrys
assisting. Then, Larry Kopecky added a third goal and
the Blues went into the second with 3-1 lead.
The Jr. Blues started fast in the second. Danny
Brown made a spectacular play, stealing the puck and scoring an
unassisted goal just 2 minutes into the period. The goal was
Brown's first CSHL goal. The Jr. Blues continued to pressure, but
it took a 5-3 power play to score the next goal. Jimmy Jost
made a perfect pass to Kopecky who scored his second of the game.
The Jr. Blues took advantage of a very undisciplined
Jets squad in the third period. Pete Wildhaber and Kenny
Jacobsmeyer each scored power play goals. Tony Jost
added the capper late in the period. Derek Szesny was
tops in net again, recording his third victory in as many starts.

Blues Win Home Opener!
The
last time the Jr. Blues took the ice at the Affton Ice Rink, they
carried off the Hurster Cup in victory. This time stakes weren't
as high, but the excitement in the rink was there for the home opener.
The Jr. Blues, hot off of two big road wins, continued their early
season success. Cory Spradling scored halfway
through the first period, converting a rebound off a Tony Jost
shot. Moments later Jeremy Ramsey scored his first
CSHL goal, one-timing a Kyle O'Kane pass. Mike
Keeven recorded his 5th assist of the young season on the play.
Late in the period, Michael Davies scored an unassisted
goal to close the first period scoring.
The Jr. Blues started the second period just as strong, scoring early on
a Kyle O'Kane goal. O'Kane converted a Jeremy Ramsey cycling play
as O'Kane made a great second effort on the goal. Cory Spradling
then scored his second goal of the game on the power play with Tony Jost
and Shawn Wring assisting. Late in the period,
Michael Davies combined with Tony Jost and Cory Spradling to secure the
Jr. Blues 6-0 two period lead.
The third period saw little action, however Michael Davies completed his
second hat-trick in two games. Cory Spradling assisting on the
goal for a four point night. Derek Szesny, playing
strong again between the pipes, had his second consecutive shutout
spoiled with just 45 seconds remaining in the game. The 7-1
victory puts the Jr. Blues in first place in the early CSHL season.

Jr. Blues Sweep the Ice Dogs!
For the fourth consecutive game, the Jr. Blues jumped to
a 3-0 first period lead. This time the Jr. Blues power play was
responsible for all three goals. Cory Spradling
scored the game's first goal with Michael Davies and Tony
Jost assisting. Michael Davies then tallied the next two
goals, both with great shots. Tony Jost assisted on both as Cory
Spradling and Shawn Gawrys assisting on one goal each.
The rest of the game was a sloppy affair as both teams seemed to
struggle and no goals were scored. Jr. Blues goaltender Devan
McConnell made his CSHL debut in net as he made two big
breakaway saves and recorded his first CSHL shutout. The Jr. Blues
now prepare for the Metro Jets who will be visiting the Affton Ice Rink
next weekend.

Blues Start Season With a Bang!
The
2003-2004 defending CSHL Champions start this season with a young and
inexperienced team. The young Jr. Blues proved to be hungry as
they started the season in impressive fashion. Tony Jost
started the scoring early in the game deflecting a Mike Keeven
shot. The goal was his first CSHL goal. Zane Truman,
one of only 5 returning vets in the lineup, scored midway through the
period with a nifty backhander. Mike Hewkin assisted
on the goal. Closing the period out in style, Tony Jost added his second
goal, on the power play with Keeven and Michael Davies assisting.
The second period the Jr. Blues scored a tic-tac-toe power play goal
with Michael Davies netting his first CSHL goal. Assisting on the
pretty goal were Tony Jost and Cory Spradling.
Moments later Spradling added his first CSHL goal, sniping a shot over
the goaltenders shoulder off of a Michael Davies feed.
The third period was more of the same. Ken Jacobsmeyer
scored his first CSHL goal off of a Chris Koenen rebound.
Spradling added his second of the game. Then, Zach Barron
scored his first CSHL goal converting a Jacobsmeyer feed.
Derek Szesny started his CSHL career in style making 15
saves earning the shutout.

Jr. Blues Sweep Opening Weekend!
The young Jr. Blues made it two shutouts in a row
defeating the Flint Jr. Generals 13-0. The hungry Jr. Blues
started fast and never let up. Scoring three goals in the first
period, the Jr. Blues dominated play. Michael Davies
scored on a Mike Keeven rebound scoring the games first
goal on the power play. Cory Spradling added two
more before the first period ended.
The second period was a barrage of Jr. Blues goals. Derek
Janssen netted a power play goal. Kyle O'Kane
scored his first CSHL goal on a set up from Zach Barron.
Michael Davies added his second of the game. Jim Jost
scored on a slick pass from Zane Truman. Tony
Jost added one and Zane Truman added another. Jim Jost
closed out the scoring late in the period giving the Jr. Blues a 10-0
lead.
Zane Truman added his second goal early in the third period. Then
Jim Jost completed the hat-trick. Moments later, Michael Davies
completed his hat-trick to close out the scoring.
John Hoehne recorded his first CSHL shutout making 31
saves in the win.
