Game Winning Streak Stopped
The Jr. Blues won the last 16 regular season
games of the 2003-04 campaign then proceeded to win their first
15 games this season and were riding a 31 game winning streak
into the Sunday contest against the Toledo Cherokee. The
Cherokee scored the only goal of the first period as they
converted a turnover in the St. Louis zone.
The Cherokee scored early in the second period
to take a 2-0 lead. Zach Barron cut the lead
as he scored on a second effort goal coming from behind the net.
Eddie Effinger and Kyle O'Kane
assisted on the cycling play. With a large amount of
penalties called in the later stages of the second, the Jr.
Blues found themselves in an unusual extended period of 3 on 3
hockey. Ken Grasso took advantage of the
open ice as he tied the game on a breakaway with a minute
remaining in the period.
The Jr. Blues successfully killed off 3 minutes of a 5 on 3
power play early in the third period. With neither team
seemingly getting many opportunities, the Cherokee took the lead
with 10 minutes to play. The Cherokee did an excellent job
of keeping the Jr. Blues in check for the next 7 minutes.
In the final 3 minutes of the game the goaltender from Toledo
made every save in the frantic scramble by the Jr. Blues.
With 4.1 seconds remaining the Cherokee were guilty of covering
the puck in the crease and the Jr. Blues were awarded a penalty
shot. Jr. Blues leading scorer Kyle O'Kane
was robbed by the Cherokee goalie and the Cherokee defeated the
Jr. Blues ending their historic streak. The Jr. Blues
outshot the Cherokee 42-16 for the game.

The Jr. Blues used all facets of their game to defeat the
Toledo Cherokee 6-1 on Saturday night. The home team exploded for 4
first period goals. Kyle O'Kane got it going early as he
scored on a wrap around after Zach Barron won a battle behind
the Toledo net. The Cherokee took two consecutive penalties and the Jr.
Blues converted quickly on the 5 on 3 advantage. Zach Barron
finished the passing play with O'Kane and Pete Wildhaber
assisting. With the Jr. Blues still on the power play, Ryan
Kretzer converted a Tony Jost pass just 13 seconds after
the Barron goal. O'Kane closed the scoring
for the period with Barron and Eddie Effinger
assisting.
The second period showed a Cherokee rush as Blake Yanics made
numerous key saves. Cory Spradling scored the only goal of
the period on a power play with Mike Keeven and Tony Jost
assisting. Tony Jost scored early in the third as he was
set up all alone on a passing play from Spradling and Kretzer.

Jr.
Blues Sweep Mustangs!
Against great adversity, the Jr. Blues showed
the Peoria Mustangs what they are made of. The Mustangs
were a desperate team needing a split to keep pace with the
streaking Jr. Blues. The game started with great adversity
as Pete Wildhaber was making an outlet pass.
His stick broke in half while attempting the pass and slid right
to a Peoria player who deposited the goal just 53 seconds into
the contest. The Mustangs felt that physical play would
lead them to victory as they created havoc on the Jr. Blues.
The Mustangs scored on the power play to lead 2-0 after the
first period seemingly in charge of the game.
It is times like this a team finds out what they are made of and
the Jr. Blues definitely responded to the goonish tactics of the
Mustangs. The second period was all Jr. Blues with
relentless forechecking and scoring chances. Despite that,
the official made a rarely seen call for a penalty shot against
St. Louis. Goaltender Blake Yanics gave up
nothing on the attempt as the shot nipped the crossbar.
Finally, Cory Spradling scored to cut the Mustang
lead. New defenseman, Andrew Gibson,
assisted on the play. Then the Jr. Blues seemed to swarm
the Mustangs. With a huge flurry the Mustang defender
tried to clear the zone. But the puck went directly to Jr.
Blues defenseman Chris Stock on the point and he
blasted a shot past the Peoria goaltender. The game was
tied 2-2 with one period to play.
The third period was tense. The Jr. Blues had started to
gain momentum and then a questionable tripping call was assessed
against them. After the successful penalty kill, the Jr.
Blues again started to gain momentum. Tim Jost
received an outlet pass from C.J. Chappell. Jost
streaked down the left wing and blasted a shot past the Peoria
goaltender. As the Jr. Blues were celebrating the official
went to the Peoria bench. Then the referee talked to the
linesmen. Then the goal was taken off the scoreboard.
Explanation was a whistle was accidentally blown. Tape
review showed the ref clearly point to the net, the red light
went on, no whistle was ever blown. The call could have
discouraged the Jr. Blues but it only ignited the team.
The Jr. Blues were relentless with scoring chance after scoring
chance. With four minutes to play, Barry Baxter
stripped the Mustang defenseman of the puck on a forecheck.
Baxter quickly dished the puck to Ken Grasso
who skated to the slot and sniped a perfect shot past the Peoria
goaltender. Blake Yanics who was stellar all
day made a big save with the Peoria goaltender pulled and the
Jr. Blues somehow defied the odds and overcame the tremendous
adversity to win the game and sweep the Mustangs in Peoria.
The weekend sweep give the Jr. Blues a 9 point lead on the loss
side over the Mustangs. The Jr. Blues are all alone atop
the CSHL standings with a perfect 14-0-0 record.

Jr.
Blues Take Game One!
The much awaited rematch of the National Championship had the
Owen's Center buzzing at the start of the Saturday night contest. The
Mustangs excited the home crowd scoring the game's first goal on a screen shot
from the point. The Jr. Blues responded with a picture perfect passing
play. Eddie Effinger gained the zone on a Jr. Blues 3 on 2
break, he fed Zach Barron who made a spectacular pass to Kyle
O'Kane who was streaking in unattended. O'Kane
made a smart move and the game was tied. The Mustangs didn't sweat the
goal long as less than a minute an errant shot from the point hit a Jr. Blue
player and deflected in the net.
The second period the bounce went the other way as just 7 seconds into the
period Cory Spradling dumped the puck off the glass into the
Mustangs zone. As the goaltender went to retrieve the puck behind the
net, the puck took a funny bounce and ended up in the vacated net to tie the
score 2-2. The Mustangs took advantage of a power play later in the
period to regain the lead 3-2. With the Jr. Blues 2 men short, Kenny
Grasso blocked a shot and took off on a breakaway. As the first
Jr. Blues penalty expired, the two Jr. Blues went in all alone. Grasso
made the perfect shot and tied the game. On the play, well behind
the play, a Mustang player was assessed a 5 minute major for slashing a Jr.
Blue on the back of the leg. The Jr. Blues Kyle O'Kane
made sure the Mustangs paid and scored on the power play as he made a quick
move into the zone and beat the goaltender clean on a shot.
The third period was tense, but the Jr. Blues shut down all the Mustangs
options. The game ended with the goaltender pulled but Trey
Spiller stood tall and the Jr. Blues prevailed.

After a scoreless first period, the Jr. Blues
found themselves down 1-0 after an early second period goal by
the Ice Dogs. C.J. Chappell answered the Ice
Dogs with a great goal to tie the game. It was Chappell's
first CSHL goal in his second game as the big forward had been
injured until this weekend. Kyle O'Kane kept
his hot streak alive as he scored twice to give the Jr. Blues a
3-1 lead after two periods.
The third period was tense as the Ice Dogs would not go away.
Barry Baxter scored on a breakaway to give the Jr.
Blues a 4-1 lead. Less than a minute later the Ice Dogs
responded with a goal. Then Ken Grasso
scored to seal the win. The Ice Dogs played hard and
scored with less than 4 minutes left to make it 5-3. The
