Jr.
Blues Win Hurster Cup!
After a long night and emotional win over the
Peoria Mustangs Saturday, the Jr. Blues needed a big effort for
the early Sunday Hurster Cup Championship Game. C.J.
Chappell got the Jr. Blues started quickly as he took a Tim
Jost pass into the zone. Chappell
snapped a quick low shot giving the Jr. Blues the lead.
Moments later Shawn Gawrys made a quick shot from
the slot for the Jr. Blues second goal. Ryan Kretzer
and Chris Stock assisted on the goal. Before
the period was over, Tony Jost sent Cory
Spradling on an odd man rush. Spradling
found Brandon Bollig who went in all alone making
a perfect backhand move to give the Jr. Blues a huge 3-0 lead in
the first period.
The second period started good for St. Louis. On the power
play, all five Jr. Blues quickly handled the puck in the
offensive zone. Bret Morrell took a pass
from Brandon Bollig. Morrell
quickly passed it to defense partner Mike Hewkin
who immediately found Cory Spradling in the slot.
Spradling passed it to Tony Jost on
the goal line who found Bollig back door for the
pretty power play goal. Seemingly in control, the Jr.
Blues witnessed the heart and determination of the Cherokee.
Toledo scored two power play goals to trim the score to 4-2
after two periods.
The Jr. Blues were very strong in the third allowing only 6
shots. Late in the period, the Cherokee pulled their
goaltender trying to get some offense. Bret Morrell
intercepted a centering try then hit Cory Spradling
who tipped it to Tony Jost who skated in and
scored the empty net goal. Seconds later, C.J.
Chappell scored his second goal of the game as Tom
Craig set him up in the slot. Trey Spiller
was very solid again making 30 saves on 32 shots.
The post game ceremony was subdued for what one would expect to
see in a Hurster Cup Championship. The Jr. Blues took
their trophies and awards, posed for a team picture and headed
off the ice for the last CSHL game of the year. The Jr.
Blues obviously are poised and focused on the Nationals that
start on April 1 in Blaine, Minnesota. In recap, the Jr.
Blues were outstanding throughout the Hurster Cup. They
scored 13 goals while allowing only 5. The Jr. Blues only
gave up one even strength goal the entire week.

Jr.
Blues Win, Eliminate Peoria!
With the turns and twists of the Hurster Cup it all came down
to the final round-robin game between the Jr. Blues and their arch
rivals Peoria Mustangs. The Mustangs needed a 2 goal win to advance to
the Hurster Cup Championship Game. The Jr. Blues needed anything less
than that to advance.
The Mustangs were a desperate hockey club and it showed with a strong first
period. They scored the only goal of the period just two minutes into
the contest. The second period was again owned by the Jr. Blues. Tony
Jost tied the score 12 minutes into the period. With an
offensive face-off while the Jr. Blues were shorthanded, Jost
beat the center and the goaltender on a spectacular play. The third
period was exciting. The Mustangs scored a power play goal to take the
lead 3 minutes into the period. The Jr. Blues hung tough though. Eddie
Effinger started an odd man rush. Kyle O'Kane took
the Effinger pass and tied the score. The Jr. Blues were
sound the rest of the period limiting Peoria's chances. Late in the
period, with the Mustangs needing to score, they pulled their goaltender on an
offensive rush. Shawn Gawrys made a workmanlike back check
to break up the rush and Mike Hewkin gathered the loose puck.
Hewkin then headed it to Gawrys who crossed the
center line and shot between 3 Peoria players into the empty net. Blake
Yanics was again very strong in nets making 23 saves on 25 shots.
The win was the Jr. Blues 25th come from behind victory this season!
The Jr. Blues now headed to the Hurster Cup Finals against the surprising
Toledo Cherokee.

Jr.
Blue Shut Down The Cobras!
The Cincinnati Cobras were desperate for a win to keep their
Hurster Cup and Nationals hopes alive. It showed as the first
period was all Cobras as they outshot the Jr. Blues 14-6. Blake
Yanics was brilliant in net allowing only one goal in the barrage.
The second period was a different story though, as the Jr. Blues came to life
out shooting the Cobras 16-3. Down by a goal late in the second period,
the Jr. Blues found themselves on a power play. Bret Morrell
retrieved a puck in his own zone and made a rush down the ice. As he
entered the offensive zone he carried to the circles before sliding the puck
to Tony Jost. Jost then quickly cut to the
net and found Brandon Bollig on the back door for an easy tap
in. The score was tied entering the third period. The Jr. Blues
continued to take the play to the Cobras. Half way through the period
the Jr. Blues were on the power play. Kyle O'Kane passed
it to Chris Stock on the point. Stock's shot
was saved but O'Kane one-timed the rebound top shelf to give the
Jr. Blues the lead. St. Louis was perfect the rest of the way limiting
shots and opportunities holding on for the 2-1 win.

Jr.
Blues Start Hurster Cup With 2-0 Win!
The opening game of the Hurster Cup Championships was
dominated by the Jr. Blues. However, the goaltending of the Toledo
Cherokee kept it close. Despite out shooting the Cherokee in the first
period 18-6, there was no scoring. The second period was much more of
the same until Shawn Gawrys solved the goaltending. On the
power play, Gawrys took a quick feed from Ryan Kretzer
after a Ken Grasso shot. Gawrys' quick low
shot beat the goaltender cleanly giving the Jr. Blues the first goal of the
Hurster Cup. Moments later, Eddie Effinger won a battle on
the boards and gave it to Kyle O'Kane on the half boards. O'Kane
hit Zach Barron down low as Barron made a quick
shot to give the Jr. Blues a 2-0 lead. That was all the scoring for the
game as the Jr. Blues defensively shut down the Cherokee only allowing 13
shots for the game. The shutout was Trey Spiller's second
in a row in the playoffs.

Jr.
Blues Shutout Chiefs, Sweep Series!
The Jr. Blues advanced in the CSHL playoffs with
a dominating 6-0 win over the Motor Chiefs. The Jr. Blues
started strong controlling the entire first period. Brenden
Sheehan chipped home a rebound off of a Mike
Hewkin shot to give the Jr. Blues the lead halfway
through the period. Then, as the clock was clicking down, Shawn
Gawrys realizing his time limitations snapped a quick
shot from outside the blue line that fooled the Chiefs
goaltender with .1 second remaining in the period.
The Jr. Blues continued their strong play throughout the second
period. The only tally of the period was a shot from the
point by Chris Stock whose wrist shot on the power
play found its way into the goal past the goaltender. Tony
Jost and Cory Spradling assisted.
The third period the Jr. Blues were content on running out the
clock. But they did take advantage of two power plays.
Brandon Bollig scored on a quick shot on a rush
from the top of the circle with Chris Stock and Mike
Keeven assisting. Then Brenden Sheehan
picked up a loose puck near center ice and used his blazing
speed to convert a shorthanded goal. Mike Hewkin
rounded out the scoring on another power play as he led an odd
man rush and sniped a perfect shot over the goaltenders
shoulder. Tim Jost made the assist on the
play. Trey Spiller was steady throughout the
game and made a handful of spectacular saves to secure the
shutout.
The Jr. Blues now head to Peoria for the Hurster Cup Final Four.
The Jr. Blues join the Cincinnati Cobras, Peoria Mustangs, and
Toledo Cherokee to complete the Final Four. With the Jr.
Blues already securing a birth in the Nationals, the Hurster Cup
Champion will join the Jr. Blues in Blaine Minnesota. If
the Jr. Blues win the Hurster Cup, the Hurster Cup runner up
will advance to Blaine.

Four
Goal Second Period Lifts Jr. Blues Over Chiefs!
The Jr. Blues controlled most of the first
period play as they held the Chiefs without a shot in the first
12 minutes of the period. The Jr. Blues tested the Chiefs
netminder early and often with 18 shots but the period ended
scoreless. The second period the Jr. Blues used their
special teams to pull away. The first St. Louis goal was a
power play goal as Eddie Effinger took a Mike
Keeven pass on the half board. Effinger
took one stride and sniped a perfect shot over the shoulder of
the goaltender on the short side. The Chiefs tied the
score on a 5 on 3 power play that a pass deflected off a St.
Louis defender in the net. But St. Louis quickly responded
with a shorthanded goal. Andrew Gibson
intercepted a pass at the blue line and quickly shot the puck
toward the Motor City net. Cory Spradling
deflected the puck while driving the net as the puck flipped
over the goaltender into the net. Later in the period on
the power play, Eddie Effinger netted his second
goal. This time a Bret Morrell shot
deflected wide off the boards but went directly to Effinger
who made no mistake. Late in the period, Danny Brown
made a spectacular play. With Tim Jost
flipping a pass for Brown to skate to, Brown
then walked the defenseman and while being drug to the ice
flipped the puck over the Motor City goalie. Chris
Stock started the play with a pass to Jost.
The third period was penalty filled, but St. Louis scored the
only goals. Zach Barron took a quick feed
from Eddie Effinger. Barron
quickly went top shelf with the puck to give St. Louis a 5-1
lead. Then, on the power play, the Jr. Blues tic-tac-toe, Cory
Spradling to Tony Jost to Brandon
Bollig put a little icing on the cake for the Jr. Blues.
The period though was a tough one, as the Chiefs fired 16 shots,
mainly on the power play, at Blake Yanics who was
flawless in the period. The penalty filled game had St.
Louis convert 3 power play goals on 9 attempts while the Chiefs
converted 1 power play goal on 13 attempts and gave up a
short handed goal to the Jr. Blues.

Jr.
Blue Sweep Cobras!
The Cobras again struck first with a power play
goal midway through the first period. Late in the period,
the Jr. Blues line of Tim Jost, C.J. Chappell
and Barry Baxter tied the score. A great
forecheck by Chappell who cycled the puck to Tim
Jost who found Baxter all alone in the slot.
Baxter calmly slammed it home to tie the score.
The second period started with strong play by the Cobras. Kyle
O'Kane then blocked a shot from the point and started a
two on one play. Zach Barron drove the net,
and O'Kane took the shot from about 20 feet as he
sniped a perfect shot over the glove of the Cobra goaltender.
The O'Kane line again was swarming later in the
period with tremendous pressure. Zach Barron
finally lit the lamp after an intense flurry in front of the net
to give St. Louis a 3-1 lead. But the Cobras came back late
in the period to cut the lead to 3-2.
The third period did not start well for St. Louis as they took an
early penalty. Ken Grasso and Ryan
Kretzer put on a pressure forecheck that resulted in a
turnover just inside the Cobras blue line. Grasso
took the puck on a quick breakaway and sniped a perfect shot under
the bar to give the Jr. Blues a two goal lead. Paul
Puglisi hit Ryan Kretzer giving St. Louis a
3 on 2 break. Kretzer patiently waited for the
perfect passing lane and hit Brenden Sheehan who was
driving the net. Sheehan made no mistake to
complete the scoring giving the Jr. Blues the weekend 2 game sweep
and season 4 game sweep. Trey Spiller was
extremely impressive throughout the game making 27 saves.
St. Louis now heads home for the opening round of the CSHL
playoffs this Friday and Saturday at 7:45 at the Affton Ice Rink.

Third
Period Come Back Lifts Jr. Blues Over Cobras 4-2!
The very first minute of the game, the puck never
left the St. Louis zone as the Cobras dominated. The Cobras
scored just 1:08 into the game to seize the momentum. St.
Louis responded with Tony Jost scoring a power play
goal with Chris Stock and Mike Keeven
assisting. The period was evenly played and stayed 1-1.
The second period was a very good one for St. Louis but the Cobra
goaltender stopped all 17 St. Louis shots. The Cobras scored
the lone goal of the period and took a 2-1 lead into the third
period.
The Jr. Blues dominated the Cobras in the third period. Cory
Spradling took a pass in the neutral zone and went in on the
Cincinnati defense. Spradling made a quick move
and drove to the net with the defender hanging on him. Spradling
made the perfect shot though, tying the game at 2. The Jr.
Blues mounted a tremendous attack at that point dominating the next
7 minutes. Bret Morrell took a pass on the
point moved in and scored the game winner with 9 minutes to play.
The Cobras pulled their goaltender in the last minute. Blake
Yanics, who had a terrific game, made one last big save
before the Jr. Blues cleared the zone. Cory Spradling
won the race for the puck and shot it into the empty net for his
record 50th goal of the season.

Jr.
Blues Scalp Cherokee 9-2!
The first period started with the Cherokee on an
early power play. The Cherokee converted and quickly led
1-0. In the close checking period, the Jr. Blues did
manage to tie it up. Eddie Effinger set up Kyle
O'Kane who had a wide open lane to the net. At the
last moment, O'Kane dished the puck to Zach
Barron who tapped in the goal past the Cherokee
netminder.
The second period was still a very highly contested period.
Cory Spradling gave the Jr. Blues the lead on a
power play with Brandon Bollig and Tony Jost
making the play. After the Cherokee tied the score, the
Jr. Blues went back to work. Mike Keeven
broke up a Cherokee rush and set up Ken Grasso who
had a 3 on 2 break. Grasso quickly hit Ryan
Kretzer driving the net as he made a perfect move
depositing a backhand for the goal. The Brenden
Sheehan, Tim Jost and C.J. Chappell
line provided the next St. Louis surge. After a great
forecheck Sheehan found Jost who
quickly hit Chappell. C.J. one-timed
it past the Cherokee goalie and the Jr. Blues took a 4-2 lead.
The third period was a clinic of power play efficiency as the
Jr. Blues scored 5 goals with the man advantage against the
undisciplined play of Toledo. Early in the period Pete
Wildhaber kept a clearing pass in and then he and Zach
Barron won a battle on the boards. Barron
eventually gave it to O'Kane who walked around the
defense and goaltender for the goal. Moments later the
three combined again with O'Kane sniping a perfect
shot off the crossbar-goalpost junction. Pete
Wildhaber then recorded his second goal in as many games
as he blasted a shot on a 5 on 3 power play that beat the
goaltender cleanly. The Jr. Blues display was not over as Wildhaber
again started the play hitting C.J. Chappell on
the half board. Chappell found Tim
Jost in the slot and he one-timed a shot for the eighth
St. Louis goal. Late in the game on yet another power
play, Brenden Sheehan sent Mike Hewkin
and C. J. Chappell on a 2 on 1 break. Chappell
hit Hewkin cutting to the net for the perfect play
putting an explanation point on the Jr. Blues performance.

Jr.
Blues Come Back and Beat Cherokee
A tough travel day for the Jr. Blues had their legs seemingly
still in St. Louis during the opening period of Saturday's game. Cory
Spradling tapped in a rebound of Brandon Bollig.
After Bollig received a breakout pass from Chris Stock,
he undressed the Toledo defenseman and lifted a backhander that produced the
rebound. The Cherokee responded with two quick goals as they led 2-1
after one period.
The Jr. Blues found their legs for the second period out scoring Toledo 3-0
and out shooting the Cherokee 21-6. Zach Barron tied the
game on the power play. Chris Stock started the play
hitting Kyle O'Kane who found Barron unattended
near the net. Barron lifted the puck over the goaltender
with a perfect shot under the bar. Moments later the Jr. Blues forecheck
resulted in a chance as Tony Jost directed the puck to Cory
Spradling behind the net. Spradling walked out all
alone and backhanded a shot over the goaltender to give St. Louis the lead.
Ken Grasso then gave the Jr. Blues some breathing room
intercepting a Toledo pass and quickly wristing a shot by the goaltender.
The third period was seemingly under control for St. Louis but the Cherokee
took advantage of sloppy defensive zone play by St. Louis and cut the lead to
4-3. But, Cory Spradling completed his hat-trick on a
great give and go from Tony Jost on a play originated by Chris
Stock on the power play. Trey Spiller kept the Jr.
