Blues Hang On to Defeat Desperate Columbus Team
The Jr. Blues scored the only goal of the first
period to begin Sunday's game differently than Saturday's.
The power play goal started with a quick shot from the point by Bret
Morrell. Tony Jost then secured the
rebound and passed it to Brandon Bollig who
deposited it in the empty side of the net. The second
period was all St. Louis. Eddie Effinger won
a perfect draw to point man Pete Wildhaber who
blasted a shot past the Columbus goaltender. Amazingly
this was Captain Pete's first goal of the season.
Then Eddie Effinger showed off his gifted hands
and made a fancy move to beat the defenseman and goaltender for
a 3-0 lead. After Columbus tallied, Ryan Kretzer
restored the 3 goal lead with just 10 seconds remaining in the
period. Ken Grasso and Pat Dolan
assisted. The third period got a little interesting.
Columbus narrowed the score to 4-2 early on. With Columbus
playing well, they netted a goal with 4 seconds remaining to
make the final 4-3.

Blues Defeat Columbus
Jr. B Blue Jackets 4-1
The Columbus Jr. B Blue Jackets scored the only goal of the
first period as they desperately need points to reach the final playoff spot
in the CSHL. The Jr. Blues then responded with a strong second period.
Kyle O'Kane scored the only goal of the period as he took a Pat
Dolan feed in the corner and worked his magic beating the goaltender
on a strong move from behind the net. The third period was all St. Louis
as Ryan Kretzer finished a pretty passing play from Shawn
Gawrys and Kyle O'Kane. Gawrys then
sniped a perfect shot to increase the lead with Kretzer and O'Kane
assisting. Late in the period, O'Kane sniped a shot
himself on the power play with Gawrys and Kretzer
assisting. Goaltender Trey Spiller was a last second
started as scheduled starter Blake Yanics was dinged by a shot
in warm-ups. Spiller played tremendously, especially in

Blues Start Slow, Finish Fast
The Jr. Owls were ready to play and the Jr. Blues were a
little slow to get it going in the weekend opener. The Jr. Owls scored
the first goal of the game just 2 minutes into the contest. The Jr. Owls
continued to out play the Jr. Blues for most of the period out shooting the
home team 15-10. But the Jr. Blues capitalized on their scoring chances
as Cory Spradling and Tony Jost each scored to
give the Jr. Blues a 2-1 lead.
The second period was not much better. Zach Barron scored
early in the period, but most of the play was in favor of Grand Rapids.
The Jr. Owls cut the St. Louis lead to 3-2 with 7 minutes remaining in the
second period. The Jr. Owls were outplaying and out shooting the Jr.
Blues 9-4 at that point of the period. But the Jr. Blues responded
quickly with Cory Spradling and Brandon Bollig
scoring to take a 5-2 lead. The third period was all St. Louis as they
fired 15 shots and scored 3 times. Cory Spradling recorded
the hat-trick and took over the CSHL goal scoring lead. Tim Jost
one-timed a perfect Pete Wildhaber pass on the power play and Ryan
Kretzer finished a quick 3 on 2 started by Ken Grasso
that had Shawn Gawrys streak by a defenseman and set up Kretzer.
Blake Yanics was excellent early in the game and made 25 saves
on 27 shots.
