FORMER JR. BLUES PLAY BIG ROLES FOR ACHA NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

Mar 9, 2016

Five St Louis Jr. Blues alumni celebrated a national championship victory in collegiate club hockey Tuesday night, as Lindenwood University defeated Iowa State 2-1 to win the ACHA Division I crown in Bensenville, IL. This is the Lions’ third ACHA title, joining previous wins in 2009 and 2010.

Three former Jr. Blues forwards all were major contributors for the Lions: junior Lukas Daniels serves as team captain, and freshman Tommy Heinzman set up sophomore Mike Lozano’s goal at 6:47 of the third period of the final, giving the Lions a lead they would not relinquish.

Two other sophomores, forward Alex Carlsson and defenseman Jake Wynd, round out the Jr. Blues contingent at LU. They join a long line of Jr. Blues talent that have elected to remain in the St Louis metro area to continue their hockey careers while attending Lindenwood.

Jr. Blues head coach Chris Flaugher congratulated his former charges, saying that “Lozano, Heinzman, Daniels, Wynd and Carlsson all played big roles while with the Jr. Blues and it's no surprise that they played big roles for Lindenwood and helped them win a national championship. The St. Louis Jr. Blues would like to congratulate Coach Rick Zombo, the staff, players and university on a great accomplishment. They are a first class school and hockey program and this title is another notch on their belt.”
